COLUMBIA — S.C. Supreme Court Associate Justice Donald Beatty will serve as the court’s next chief justice, becoming the second black man to hold the post.
Beatty, who was unanimously elected by the Legislature today, said his election speaks volumes about South Carolina.
“We are now moving in a progressive manner,” he said. “We’re moving forward. And it’s good to see that the Legislature supports this effort.”
He will replace Chief Justice Costa Pleicones, who will step down at the end of the year because he reached the state-mandated retirement age of 72.
