Gipson Gets It…

Byron Gipson will be the next prosecutor for Richland and Kershaw Counties. Gipson grabbed 70 percent of the vote to Meadors 30 percent.

Gipson, 46, a Columbia trial lawyer who has never held public office, defeated petition candidate John Meadors, 56, with more than half of all votes counted in Richland County.

The Fifth Circuit Solicitor is the chief law enforcement officer in Richland and Kershaw counties, tasked with overseeing all criminal prosecutions. The 144-person office has a $10 million budget, 42 assistant prosecutors and a variety of court diversion programs. The position pays $141,300 a year.
