The Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) celebrated the return of nonstop service between Columbia and O’Hare International Airport on May 21 during a press conference and gate celebration marking the restart of American Airlines flights to Chicago.
The renewed service connects Columbia travelers directly to one of the nation’s largest airline hubs, offering expanded access to destinations across the United States and internationally. American Airlines is now offering twice-daily nonstop flights between CAE and Chicago O’Hare ORD) seven days a week.
Airport officials said the route restoration represents a significant milestone for both the airport and the Midlands region.
“This is a big win not only for CAE, but for the entire Midlands community,” said Kim Crafton, vice president of marketing and air service development for CAE. “When the airline calls and says, ‘We are coming back with more service,’ it reflects confidence in this market.”
Anton Gunn, chairman of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Commission, emphasized the importance of community support in continuing to grow air service options.
“Every person that chooses to fly out of this airport supports future air service,” Gunn said. “If you want more routes and more destinations, it starts with you flying out of CAE.”
During the event, Chris White, president and CEO of CAE, highlighted the economic impact air service has on the Midlands.
“Air service supports job creation, community prosperity and new business opportunities across the Midlands,” White said. “Our goal is to help these numbers grow and continue connecting the Midlands to the world.”
According to airport officials, CAE supports more than 16,000 jobs and generates an estimated $1 billion annually in economic impact throughout the region.
American Airlines traces its roots back to an air mail carrier founded in the Midwest in 1926. Today, the airline operates more than 6,000 daily flights to more than 350 destinations in over 60 countries and serves more than 200 million customers annually.
Airport leaders encouraged Midlands residents to support the new route by choosing to fly from Columbia whenever possible.
