The Rosenwald School Project was, at the time, the country’s best answer to improving the poor state of education for blacks in the rural South in the early 1900s. The goal of the project was to provide black children with safe, purpose-built, school buildings. Most southern counties provided few or no public school building for African American students. Therefore, they had to attend school in dilapidated structures with few amenities other than makeshift desks and benches. The MinorityEye presents “Eye on Education” a retrospective on educating black children. Before we can tackle the problems with our education system today, we must first look back and understand where we came from and how we got here.
A LOOK AT— The Gifford Rosenwald School
Gifford Rosenwald School, sometimes called Gifford Colored School, was built in 1920-21. It was one of 500 rural schools built for African-American students in South Carolina. Funded in part by the Julius Rosenwald Foundation from 1917 to 1932. The first of four Rosenwald schools in Hampton County, it was a two-room frame building constructed at a cost of $3,225. The school had two to five teachers for an average of almost 200 students a year in grades 1st –9th until it closed in 1958. That year a new school serving Gifford and Luray was built by an equalization program seeking to preserve school segregation. Replaced the 1921 school. The old school was used for church services and Sunday School classes after it closed. #eyeoneducation #scfored #theminorityeye

The Eclipse - the 162.5m long and $1.2 billion beauty is the world's largest and most expensive yacht in the world. The Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, several hot tubs, and a disco hall. It is also equipped with three launch boats and a mini-submarine that is capable of submerging up to 50 meters or 160 ft.
