Columbia Branch NAACP to Host 36th Annual Freedom Fund Awards GALA in Honor of Late Senator John L. Scott, Jr.

(Columbia, SC) – President L. Oveta Glover and the Columbia, SC Branch of the NAACP are excited to announce the highly anticipated 36th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Gala, set to take place on Friday, September 15, 2023, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This prestigious event, a longstanding tradition now in its 36th year, stands as the premier fundraiser for the Columbia SC Branch of the NAACP. The evening will commence with a reception at 5:45 PM, followed by the dinner and program at 7:00 PM.

This year’s Awards Gala carries deep significance as it is dedicated to the memory of the late Senator John L. Scott, Jr. Senator Scott, a distinguished life member of our branch, was an unwavering champion of civil rights and devoted his life to tirelessly advocating for the cause.

We are privileged to welcome the esteemed U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

Secretary, Marcia L. Fudge, as our keynote speaker. Secretary Fudge brings a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to this year’s Awards Gala.

The Freedom Fund Awards Gala serves a noble purpose by raising funds to sustain the ongoing battle for civil rights within our community. Over the past few years, our branch has experienced remarkable

growth in membership, thanks to our impactful contributions. Notable initiatives include the Columbia, SC Branch Housing Navigators program, which provided crucial assistance to individuals facing eviction during the pandemic by connecting them with alternative resources. Additionally, we have hosted forums on gun violence that brought community leaders together to engage in vital discussions and propose solutions, working in collaboration with community members. These are just a few examples of the invaluable services offered by the Columbia, SC branch.

The Freedom Fund Awards Gala presents a unique opportunity for everyone to contribute further to our mission and continue our vital work in the fight for justice.

Additionally, on Sunday, September 17th, 2023, the Columbia SC Branch will also host a District 19 candidate forum for the upcoming special elections to fill the seat of the late Senator John L. Scott, Jr. The forum will commence at 4:00 PM and will be held at Antioch Baptist Church, located at 5715 Koon Rd, Columbia, SC 29203. All candidates have been invited to participate.
