Congressman James E. Clyburn will host his 34th World Famous Annual Fish Fry on Friday, May 29, bringing one of South Carolina’s most recognized political and community traditions back to Columbia.
The free public event will take place from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at EdVenture Children’s Museum’s Bob Cole Plaza, located at 211 Gervais Street in Columbia. Gates open at 8:00 p.m., and the speaking program is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.
Clyburn began the fish fry more than three decades ago as a way to thank campaign workers and volunteers. Over the years, it has grown into a major community gathering known for fried whiting on white bread, music, dancing, fellowship, and old-fashioned political conversation. The event has long been considered one of the signature gatherings in South Carolina politics.
This year’s program is expected to include Congressman Clyburn, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Congressman Ro Khanna of California’s 17th Congressional District. The event is open to the public, and public registration is available online.
Previous Fish Fry events have drawn community members, elected officials, candidates, political observers, and residents from across the state. The gathering has also been covered as a Columbia tradition featuring music, games, drinks, fried fish, and a welcoming atmosphere for the public.
