Dick Harpootlian knows politics. A lifelong Democrat, he’s been a leading voice within the democratic party since the Kennedy era. A lawyer by trade, Harpootlian served as fifth-circuit solicitor in the early 1990’s and chaired the South Carolina Democratic Party — twice. Now he is running for the State Senate with the hope of bringing transparency and accountability to the state house. We sat down with Harpootlian just days before his special election for a wide-ranging interview that covered everything from campaign for better regulation of Columbia’s Five Points District to his controversial comment about renting the black vote.
