(Columbia, S.C.) — “In an era rife with disinformation and misinformation, media literacy provides the tools and skills necessary to navigate the digital world safely and with agency. That’s why Columbia’s OTR Media Group is partnering with Richland Library to offer its second free media literacy workshop: “Media Literacy is Self-Defense” this month at the library’s Northeast branch.
OTR Media Group developed its “Screen Language” (SLM) methodology to address the overwhelming presence of screen-based media today. This innovative training doesn’t just teach theory; it equips individuals with practical, real-time skills to critically engage with content on any device. Much like martial arts or first aid provide the skills to protect oneself in the physical world, OTRMG’s goal is to foster literacy, not just fluency, in the digital environments where disinformation often thrives.
“‘Media Literacy is Self-Defense’ is an excellent analogy because it applies these same principles to the online world. It’s about recognizing and responding to digital threats to protect your well-being, privacy, and identity,” says OTR Media Group Founder/CEO Shekeese Duvall.
“We are living in the Age of Screens; the public needs a solution that works in real time, while you are engaging with a screen — I am extremely excited about Richland Library’s efforts to make media literacy accessible and intuitive for everyone.”
