Drawing in Local Artists during Richland Library’s artWORKS Week

Columbia, SC–  It is an entire week, devoted to aspiring artists. From April 3 – 8, the Studio Services Department at Richland Library wants to encourage the creative dreams of local residents by hearing first-hand accounts from those who have be there and done that.

artWORKS Week: Art, School & Everything Else

Thinking about art school? Finished your degree and not sure what’s next? Just want to talk to some artists? Equal parts advice column and post-mortem, join our panel of local artists to discuss art, school and everything else. Speakers include: Jessica Bornick, Owlette; Seth Gadsden, Indie Grits Labs; Avery Harrison, Richland Library; Simon Tarr, USC School of Visual Art & Design.

artWORKS Week: Meet the Makers
6 – 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 4
Richland Library Main, Theater

Join us for a panel discussion with local creative professionals who earn a living with their art. Find out how they got started, how they run their business and what tips they have for makers who are new to the business of art. Hosted by our own Artist-in-Residence, Marius Valdes. artWORKS Week: Start Your Digital Portfolio
6 – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 5

Artists of all kinds can benefit from a professional online presence. Learn how to promote yourself and your art by creating a digital portfolio. This class will focus on how to use WIX software to develop art-related portfolios.

artWORKS Week: Art, Puppetry and the Works of Lyon Hill
6 – 8 p.m., Thursday, April 6
Richland Library Main, Studio 220

Join Columbia Marionette Theatre’s Art Director, puppet maker and acclaimed, local artist Lyon Hill for an in-depth conversation on puppetry, getting creative and making a living. Then learn some puppet-making techniques from the artist, himself, by getting hands-on and creating a puppet of your own. This will be a fun and informative workshop.

11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 8

Join award-winning editorial cartoonist Robert Ariail and former editorial page editor of The State newspaper Brad Warthen as they reunite to talk about art, writing and earning a creative living.
