The Wiley Kennedy Foundation and PRISMA Health present H.I.M. (Health Initiatives for Men) 2024, held June 21-22, 2024, at Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. H.I.M 2024 is a two-day conference specifically designed for men. On Friday, June 21, there will be an event featuring a reception and a men’s health discussion led by famed actor, comedian, and health ambassador Anthony Anderson from 6:00-9:00 pm, and on Saturday, June 22, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, there will be informational sessions, various health checks, and a keynote address by the Honorable Bakari Sellers. Topics include “Your Health and Your Faith” and “Your Primary Care Physician”. There will be lots of food, free swag, and plenty of “REAL TALK”!
“The Wiley Kennedy Foundation is a Columbia, South Carolina-based non-profit created 25 years ago to serve one of the most under-served areas in downtown Columbia,” says Executive Director Gwen Singletary. “Our mission is to actively strengthen and grow the economic and educational base of the community. We are ‘Building Capacity to Build Community,’ and this men’s health conference is just one of the many ways we are providing information and services to the public,” concludes Singletary.
The H.I.M. 2024 Conference is designed to promote preventative health strategies and interventions, provide education on prevalent diseases that negatively impact men, and provide health education to mitigate chronic conditions and diseases that plague the African American male community. Since the inception of the Black Men’s Health Project in 2020, more attention has been paid to key determinants of health, such as religiosity, spirituality, stress, incarceration, racism, and segregation, that affect a high proportion of Black men. One of the questions we want attendees to consider is, “How do social conditions like racism, segregation, and discrimination affect Black men’s health”?
