It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a longtime Democratic congresswoman from Texas, and an unwavering advocate for Black Americans and justice. At the age of 74, she leaves behind a legacy marked by her dedication to serving her constituents, fighting for racial justice, and championing human rights, particularly for women and children.
Rep. Jackson Lee’s impact on our community and beyond is immeasurable. Affectionately known as “Congresswoman” by those she served, her presence was felt in every corner of the 18th Congressional District of Texas. Her legislative achievements, including the establishment of the Juneteenth Federal Holiday and the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, are testaments to her relentless pursuit of justice and equality.
In June, she revealed her battle with pancreatic cancer, facing it with the same courage and faith that defined her career. Her family’s statement reflects the deep loss we all feel: “A fierce champion of the people…her legacy will continue to inspire all who believe in freedom, justice, and democracy.”
As we mourn the loss of a beloved leader, we also celebrate her extraordinary life and the profound impact she had on millions. Her commitment to her constituents, her advocacy for marginalized communities, and her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us.
