As a journalist, I have no choice but to believe in the First Amendment and the sacred right to free speech. It is the foundation of my career, the heartbeat of the Black press tradition, and the bedrock upon which this democracy stands. I am a fierce proponent of the freedom to speak one’s opinion, to share one’s perspective, and to articulate a worldview even if that viewpoint is unpopular, uncomfortable, or directly opposed to my own.
Any individual, whether Democrat, Republican, Independent, or otherwise, who does not believe in the right to free speech is not a patriot. They are not a defender of democracy. Any elected official who seeks to punish, censor, or silence opposing viewpoints is a threat to the Constitution they swore to uphold. It is our civic duty as voters and as Americans to remove them from office, regardless of party. If you let those who hate the Constitution speak for you or lead you, you are not being represented. You are being manipulated. You are being made a fool.
You Don’t Censor the Constitution
In a country that claims democracy as its bedrock, the freedom to express a personal viewpoint should not require courage. It should be as unremarkable and unassailable as the right to vote, to move freely, or to live a life according to your own values. But in South Carolina and increasingly across the nation, that right is being stripped of its neutrality and rebranded as an act of defiance.
Rep. John King, a Democratic lawmaker from York County, did what every elected official should be able to do without fear: he spoke his mind. He offered a perspective on the legacy of Charlie Kirk, a conservative firebrand whose rhetoric has long sparked division. And for that, King now finds himself in the crosshairs of South Carolina Republicans who have launched a coordinated campaign to censure him for the apparent crime of having an opinion.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about tone. It isn’t about decorum. And it damn sure isn’t about violence. It’s about control. It’s about punishing someone for refusing to follow a script that conservative politicians desperately want to make mandatory. It’s about sending a message, especially to Black lawmakers, that stepping outside the lines drawn by white political orthodoxy will be met with retribution.
The very people who claim to be defenders of the Constitution are now calling for the censorship of a duly elected official for exercising the most foundational freedom in that document. That’s not just hypocrisy. It’s stupidity. It is the embodiment of political ignorance parading as moral outrage. These same Republicans who weaponize free speech to protect their own pundits, platforms, and provocateurs suddenly find it dangerous when someone outside their tribe speaks freely.
What kind of democracy only protects speech it agrees with?
The answer is simple: a democracy in decline!
What’s truly terrifying is how normalized this ignorance has become. The fact that only a few people on either side of the aisle have had the courage to speak up for the most basic freedom in our democracy is a sobering indictment of our political culture. John King is one of the few who did. And for that, he’s being targeted. That should scare every citizen who believes in the Constitution. It shows just how dumbed down we’ve become as a society so willing to be led by cowards with shallow minds and loud mouths. If this is what passes for leadership, then we are not just in political decline. We are in moral free fall.
This moment isn’t just about John King. It’s about what kind of country we’re becoming. And it’s about whether we, as citizens, have the clarity and courage to call out this kind of anti-democratic foolishness when we see it.
Real Patriots Don’t Fear Opinions
Rep. John King shared his thoughts on Charlie Kirk on his personal Facebook page. In a democracy, that shouldn’t be controversial. But in South Carolina, it’s sparked an absurd effort to censure him. Let’s be clear, he didn’t incite violence. He didn’t abuse his office. He expressed a personal opinion. And for that, he’s being politically targeted.
Here’s the irony: the same Republicans trying to defend Charlie Kirk’s legacy are doing so by betraying everything the man stood for. I personally disagreed with 99% of what Charlie Kirk ever said. But as a journalist, I agree 100% with his right to say it. That’s what this is about. Not agreement, but the freedom to disagree. Charlie Kirk built his career on public debate, and he died while doing it. If you truly respect his legacy, you would defend Rep. King’s right to speak. Anything less is performative, ignorant, and anti-American.
SC Republicans calling for the censorship of John King aren’t real conservatives. They’re only conservatives when it’s convenient frauds and performers playing dress-up in patriotism. These are the kind of play-play conservatives who would exploit a man’s death to breathe life into their dead-end campaigns or elevate their irrelevant profiles. These are the types you’ll catch lurking outside public bathrooms with Nancy Mace, trying to get their jollies off. The kind of so-called conservatives you’ll find sipping wine at a Nancy Pelosi fundraiser at Carole Fowler’s house. They don’t defend the Constitution; they desecrate it. If they’re attacking free speech today, you better believe your Second Amendment rights are next. When people show you who they are, believe them. These aren’t patriots. They’re political cowards dressed in conservative drag.
I want to thank Rep. John King for his courage and conviction. I also commend the York County Democratic Party for standing with him. They understand what’s at stake. Now we need more Democrats to speak up and Republicans with integrity to stop letting their party be hijacked by cowards in red ties. If your version of patriotism requires censorship, you don’t love this country. You just want to control it.
