Richland County Democratic Party sponsoring Drive-Thru Democracy

Labor Day event will help the community fight hunger, prepare to vote

(Columbia, SC) ─ Too many in Richland County lack adequate food — and the COVID-19 pandemic has made things worse, The State newspaper reported in April. The pandemic is still with us, and too many in Richland County live with hunger.

Also, the 2020 General Election remains on track for Nov. 3 — less than 75 days away — and Richland County residents can change the status quo by voting in the most important election in a lifetime.

The Richland County Democratic Party wants to help ease the burden of food insecurity in the community and help prepare citizens to vote.

From 1 to 3 p.m., on Labor Day, Sept. 7, the Party is sponsoring Drive-Thru Democracy.

“This event is about responding to a crisis. In the short term, we need to get food to people who are struggling. But in the long-term, we need to turn this ship around, which means voting,” says Matt Kisner, Chairman of the Richland County Democratic Party.

Drive-Thru Democracy will feature a non-perishable food drive, voter registration, absentee voting information and local candidates who are running for office. RCDP will have 10 sites throughout Richland County and will be practicing CDC guidelines, including wearing masks.

The RCDP is preparing for people to drive through in their vehicles to drop off their food donations and spend a short, if any, time outside their vehicles.

Food from the food drive will be distributed to several sites, including: Blythewood Christian Assistance Bridge, Columbia Housing Authority, Christian Bridge Food Bank and Sharing God’s Love.
