(Columbia, SC) — Richland Library is proud to announce the launch of its new Community Lactation Essentials Pilot Program, a free initiative designed to support breastfeeding, pumping, and pregnant caregivers across the Midlands through a partnership with Queen & Baby. This innovative pilot program reflects Richland Library’s continued commitment to creating inclusive, family-friendly spaces that meet the evolving needs of the community.
The six-month pilot program will be offered at three Richland Library locations (Main, Sandhills, and Ballentine) and will provide caregivers with access to essential lactation and pumping supplies in designated Family Care/Lactation Rooms. These trusted community spaces will now offer additional support and comfort for caregivers while visiting the library.
Each participating location will offer individually packaged Lactation Support Packs to caregivers upon request. These packs are designed to provide dignity, convenience, and hygiene, and may include essentials such as disposable nursing pads, cleansing wipes, and nipple cream. In addition, each Family Care/Lactation Room will be stocked with shared-use supplies like milk storage bags, pump wipes, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, instant ice packs, educational resources, and more. Supplies will be replenished monthly throughout the duration of the pilot.
As part of the program, Queen & Baby will also host three Community Lactation Support Circles at participating library locations. These one-hour gatherings will provide a welcoming, low-barrier environment where breastfeeding, pumping, and pregnant caregivers, along with family members, can ask questions, receive evidence-based guidance, share experiences, and connect with local doula and lactation service providers.
The program aligns with nationally recognized maternal and infant health observances throughout the year, including Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month (May), creating additional opportunities for education and community engagement.

Queen & Baby Founder Shannan Clarke said the partnership is rooted in making lactation support more accessible in everyday spaces. “Caregivers deserve safe, welcoming places where they feel seen, supported, and equipped,” Clarke said. “We are honored to partner with Richland Library to create spaces of dignity and care for families throughout the community.”
