(Columbia, SC) — The South Carolina House of Representatives has approved a measure that would name the state’s future Interstate 73 the “President Donald J. Trump Highway.”
The proposal passed the House with a 76–28 vote and has now been sent to the South Carolina Senate for further consideration. If approved there, the designation would apply to the planned interstate corridor serving parts of northeastern South Carolina.
What Is Interstate 73?
Interstate 73 is a long-planned highway project intended to connect the Grand Strand and Myrtle Beach area with Interstate 95, creating a faster route between the coast and inland communities.
The South Carolina portion of the corridor is expected to pass through Dillon, Marlboro, Marion, and Horry counties, helping improve transportation access to the rapidly growing coastal tourism region.
State leaders have discussed the interstate for decades as a way to boost economic development, tourism, and hurricane evacuation capacity in the region.
Why Lawmakers Proposed the Name
Supporters of the resolution say the naming would recognize former President Donald Trump’s role in advancing the project. During his administration, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a federal permit allowing the highway project to move forward, clearing a major regulatory hurdle that had stalled development for years.
