(SOUTH CAROLINA) — Friday, the Tom Steyer 2020 campaign announced that South Carolina State Rep. Govan, Jr., chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, will serve as a senior advisor. A member of the South Carolina House since 1992 representing District 95 in Orangeburg County, Rep. Govan previously served as the co-chair and senior advisor to former Vice-President Joe Biden during his 2008 presidential bid. He serves on the Education and Public Works Committee and the Operations and Management Committee. Govan is committed to ensuring a high-quality education for all students, supporting small businesses, and growing the economy — all values he shares with Steyer.
“Love of God, love of family, love of country, and the importance of equal opportunity. All of these values impressed me about Tom Steyer,” said Rep. Govan. “But even more impressive is the fact that Tom and Kat have leveraged their personal success to advocate for social, economic, and environmental justice and equality for all Americans. They have demonstrated that not only are they willing to talk the talk, but walk the walk.”
Steyer said of his high profile campaign hire:
“Rep. Govan is an advocate for expanding educational opportunities and supporting small businesses across South Carolina. He is a dedicated leader in South Carolina, and I am proud to have earned his support. I look forward to working alongside Rep. Govan and speaking with Palmetto State voters about breaking the corporate stranglehold on our government, restoring power back to the people, and improving the overall quality of life for all Americans through my 5 Rights Agenda.”
Rep. Govan will join Steyer today when he speaks to more than 140 elected officials at a luncheon for the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus in Columbia. This follows the recent announcement that former Rep.Harold Mitchell (D-31), a nationally acclaimed climate justice activist, had officially endorsed Tom Steyer for president.
