(Greenville, SC) – July 16 – Lee Johnson released the following statement on Wednesday in regards to his campaign for the U.S. Senate:
“Over the past few months, I’ve had the extraordinary honor of traveling across South Carolina, from the Upstate to the Lowcountry to the Midlands to the Pee Dee, to launch our campaign for the U.S. Senate. I’ve met people in churches, diners, county party meetings, and school gymnasiums. I listened to families worried about losing their healthcare, young people concerned about their future, and workers just trying to get ahead. Every conversation reminded me why I entered this race: because I care deeply about the people of this state and believe in a future where we are more united, more decent, and more compassionate.
“As the Democratic primary has taken shape, it has become clear that now is the time for unity. I’ve had honest conversations with supporters, community leaders, friends and family. And after deep reflection, I’ve decided to suspend my campaign for the United States Senate.
“This was not an easy decision. But as Democrats prepare to challenge Lindsey Graham in 2026, the best thing I can do to help in that fight is support the candidate our party selects. Lindsey Graham cannot continue to represent us. He’s left our state behind and I’ve seen firsthand how folks here are paying the price for his failed leadership.
“And without competent and ethical leadership, in combination with civil discourse among our citizens, we will fail as a society to overcome internal divisions, international wars, natural disasters, threats from emerging technologies and our country’s looming debt crisis. Without competent and ethical leadership, we will fail to leave a habitable world for generations to come. And this is my biggest worry.
“To every supporter who shared our message, offered encouragement, and believed in our campaign, you have my deepest gratitude. But I’m not going anywhere. I will keep fighting for our state, our country and our world and show up for the folks who feel unheard or left behind.
“South Carolina is home. And home is worth fighting for – together.”
