(North Charleston, SC) – Stephen Kohn, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, businessman, husband, and father, announced today that he is officially launching his campaign for the South Carolina House of Representatives in District 98. His announcement comes in the wake of Rep. Chris Murphy’s resignation.
“Service has been the constant thread throughout my life — from over a decade in uniform to helping more than 1,100 families find homes and mentoring the next generation of leaders,” said Kohn. “Now I’m ready to serve our community in a new way — by fixing our roads, lowering costs for working families, and making sure Columbia finally works for the people of District 98.”
Kohn, widely known as the “Broker for the People,” currently serves as Market Center Team Leader at Keller Williams Greater Charleston and previously led Century 21 Excel as Broker in Charge. He has served as President of the Charleston Area Realtist Association, President-Elect of the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors, and on the boards of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry and Lowcountry Youth Services. He is also a published author (Unleash Your Purpose), national leadership coach, and is completing his Doctorate in Leadership at Charleston Southern University.
Kohn’s campaign is centered on protecting democracy and ensuring every voice is heard. He will work to safeguard voting rights, defend free and fair elections, and stop partisan gerrymandering schemes that silence communities. He is committed to restoring women’s reproductive freedom, protecting access to contraception, and expanding Medicaid so every South Carolinian can get the care they need — all while lowering prescription drug costs and keeping health care close to home.
Education will be a top priority, with a focus on fully funding public schools, paying teachers fairly, and ensuring that every child has a safe and supportive classroom. Kohn will work to address rising costs by expanding affordable housing, reducing utility bills, and making childcare more accessible so parents can stay in the workforce. He also plans to strengthen the local economy by supporting small businesses, creating good-paying jobs, and investing in workforce development.
“Charleston County has escalated the competition in teacher pay, and Dorchester County needs more funding to compete. Dorchester County is being shortchanged every year by a broken state funding formula — and our students and teachers are paying the price. All of these issues are a result of a broken Columbia that is not listening to the people. Together, we can change that,” Kohn said.
