The Kemetic Institute for Health and Human Development in partnership with the Catalyst Mbongo presents the 29th Anniversary of the Listervelt Middleton Lecture Series honoring the work and legacy of the late author, poet, TV personality and scholar Listervelt Middleton. Presented each year during Black History Month, the free lecture will be held Tuesday February 18, 2025 at 7:00 P.M.at Benedict College in the Ponder Fine Arts Little Theater.
Listervelt Middleton began his formal broadcasting career as News Director at WOIC in Columbia, SC and worked with the SC Educational Television in 1977 where he was the producer and host of ETV’s award-winning program “For the People”. The program featured interviews with leading scholars from Africa, North and South America and provided an intellectual forum for the understanding of African history.
In that spirit, the Middleton Lecture Series features scholars from around the world that study African American history, culture, art & health. This year’s speaker is Dr. Riba C. Kelsey, a nationally recognized family physician and medical educator who serves as the Family Medicine Residency Program Director and Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM).
Dr. Kelsey also serves as Chair of the National Medical Association’s Family Medicine Section. Dr. Kelsey’s leadership and commitment to resident education, advancing clinical research, and providing exceptional patient care has garnered her numerous accolades and honors including: the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians’ 2022 Educator of the Year and the MSM Graduate Medical Education Faculty Member of the Year.
Dr. Kelsey is a trusted mentor and clinician, inspiring the next generation of family physicians and given her particular interest in improving health in the Black community, she regularly provides health education in the lay community. With a passion for studying and sharing African history and culture and applying African principles to daily life, she is a member of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations and serves as its Southern Regional President.
