The MinorityEye will hold the Facebook premiere of it’s Meet the Candidates Virtual Event for Richland County Council District 9 on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. This virtual event will also be available for viewing on The MinorityEye’s Facebook and YouTube pages and will be distributed locally to our subscribers through our e-cast system.

The special election comes after the untimely passing of Councilman Calvin “Chip” Jackson. Jackson was a dedicated community servant who represented the district since his election in 2016 and served on the Richland District 2 school board for eight years prior to joining County Council. Jackson was reelected as the Democratic nominee for the District after a runoff in the June primaries and was set to retain his seat after this November’s general election since there are, currently, no Republican candidates.

The MinorityEye’s Meet the Candidates event will give candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to voters and highlight their platforms. The candidates vying for the seat are Democrats Angela Addison, Jonnieka Farr, Jesica Mackey and Cody Pressley.  All of the candidates were invited to participate.

The special election will be on Tuesday, September 8 and, if necessary, a runoff election will take place on September 22. The winner of the special election will appear on the general election ballot on November 3, 2020.

In-person absentee voting for the District 9 Special Election started September 1, 2020. You may vote at 2020 Hampton Street from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. until Friday, September 4, 2020.
