For those asking why, the answer is clear: Target reneged on its $2 billion pledge to support Black-owned businesses, withdrawing from commitments made after the murder of George Floyd. This reversal is not just a policy change—it is an economic betrayal of the very consumers who have loyally supported the brand.
What You Need to Know:
- March 3, 2024:
- Stock Sell-Off Begins – Participants are urged to sell all Target stock to impact the company’s valuation.
- Black Vendor Transition Period – Black-owned businesses currently selling in Target have 30 days to shift their products online before the fast begins.
- March 5, 2024 – April 17, 2024:
- 40-Day Economic Fast from Target – No shopping at Target for 40 days.
- Redirecting Our Dollars – Instead of shopping at Target, supporters will be given a digital directory of 300,000 Black-owned businesses, thanks to a partnership with the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce and MeByBlack.
- Post-Fast Impact Analysis & Target’s Stockholder Meeting (June 12, 2024):
- Data will be collected and analyzed to measure the impact of the boycott.
- Organizers will seek a meeting with Target’s board to demand accountability before the stockholder meeting in Minneapolis, the same city where George Floyd was killed.
- If Target does not meet the demands, Phase 2 of the boycott will be announced.
The Four Key Demands to Target:
- Reinstate the $2 billion pledge to Black businesses, including funding for Black media buys.
- Deposit $250 million into Black-owned banks to support economic empowerment.
- Fully restore and expand its DEI initiatives that were previously dismantled.
- Establish 10 community retail pipeline centers at HBCUs to train Black entrepreneurs.
