(Columbia, SC) – Following news that Scout Motors, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, will build a factory to manufacture electric vehicles in Richland County, State Representative Todd Rutherford (D-Richland) released the following statement:
This is a transformative project that will bring thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in investment to Richland County, benefiting all of South Carolina,” Rutherford said. “The impact this will have on our local economy cannot be overstated: this is historic and transformative. Volkswagen’s new American electric vehicle brand, Scout Motors, has announced that its production facility will be located in South Carolina and will be able to produce 200,000 vehicles per year. Scout will start with two vehicles, a pickup truck and an SUV, and production is set to begin before the end of 2026. The new Scout platform design will focus on off-road capability and all-electric range. Scout vehicles will be designed, engineered, built and sold in America, and VW says it will offer a wide range of accessorization options to generate profits.
